Two Fossil Hackberry Leaves - Montana
These are two detailed leaf fossils, Celtis asperum, from the Fort Union Formation, Glendive,Montana. They are from the Paleocene epoch approximately 60 million years old. The dark brown preservation of the leaf fossil contrasts well against the shale. There may be some touchups to the surface of the leaf where some of it flaked onto the negative during collection.
