7.4" Miocene Fossil Coontail (Ceratophyllum) Plate - France
This is a plate of aquatic fossils preserved on diatomite rock, collected from Upper Miocene-aged (Messinian Stage) deposits in Murat, France. The rock features an incredibly well preserved common coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum), along with a variety of aquatic foliage fossil fragments. The rock measures 7.4 x 3.5" and the coontail is 3.3" wide.
The rock is diatomite, a siliceous sedimentary rock composed mainly of the fossilized skeletal remains of diatoms. Due to its porous nature, it's extremely light and relatively fragile.
Comes with an acrylic stand.
