1.7" Seed Fern (Pecopteris & Neuropteris) Fossils - Kansas
These are two well defined fossil seed ferns (Pecopteris sp. and Neuropteris sp.) from the Pennsylvanian aged Tonganoxie Sandstone of Ottawa, Kansas. Pecopteris is an extinct family of seed ferns. That is to say, it reproduces by dropping seeds rather than spores as with many modern ferns. Neuropteris is an extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
