Que Sera Stone (Llanite) For Sale

Que sera stone and llanite are trade names for unique varieties of rhyolite (a volcanic rock with high silica content) known for striking, opalescent, blue quartz phenocrysts that seem to glow in the sunlight. While the stones are similar in appearance and composition, llanite is exclusively used to refer to material found in Llano County, Texas, while que sera stone is used to refer to material from Brazil. The stones contain a variety of minerals, including quartz, feldspar, kaolinite, iron oxides, magnetite, clinozoisite, and leucozene. The stones are very dense, so they take on a very lustrous polish and are quite striking.

What Is A Rhyolite?

A rhyolite is an extrusive igneous (volcanic) rock with a very high silica content. Rhyolites are formed by eruptions of granitic magmas that contain a lot of trapped gas. This escaping gas often leaves pockets, which become filled with silica based minerals such as quartz, chalcedony, opal, etc. as the magma cools. These silicate mineral-filled pockets can give rhyolites like que sera stone and llanite a very interesting appearance.

As a side note, the granitic magma eruptions that form rhyolites are rare, but represent some of the most explosive eruptions known because of the very high amounts of gas trapped in the magma. The sites of these eruptions are often marked by large calderas.
