8" Rare, Pennsylvanian, Fossil Fern (Pecopteris) Frond - Austria
This is a gorgeous 8" long fossil fern (Pecopteris polymorpha) frond from the Corona Formation of Kronalpe, Austria. The fossil is Late Pennsylvanian (Gzhelian Stage) in age, or approximately 300 million years old. A sealant has been applied to each pinnae to help them stand out. The distal end of the frond chipped away during collection and has been remounted to the rock. There are additional repaired cracks through the rock.
Pecopteris polymorpha is an extinct species of fern that reproduced via seeds as opposed to spores, as most modern ferns reproduce. These ferns thrived during the Carboniferous Period, but died out during the Permian Period as Earth's temperatures began to drop.
Comes with a display stand.
