4.5" Juvenile Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Skull - South Dakota
This
This is a 4.5" long skull of a juvenile Merycoidodon culbertsoni, an Oreodont, from the the White River Formation, Pennington County South Dakota. This amazing specimen is almost entirely complete. The left incisive (front tooth) is the only restoration other than some crack fill. Other visible bones are likely oreodont as well. The rock it's mounted on is the same rock that it was found in.
Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
