1.6" Fossil Running Rhino (Hyracodon) Jaw Section - South Dakota

This is a 1.6" wide running rhino (Hyracodon nebrascensis) jaw section with partial teeth. It was collected from the Brule Formation (White River Badlands Group) in Pennington County, South Dakota, making this specimen approximately 32 million years old.

Hyracodons were hornless running rhinoceroses with large heads compared to their slight, pony-like bodies. They are an extinct line, though: we're sure you've noticed that there are no rhinos browsing the plains of North America today.
