2.7" Pennsylvanian Fossil Fern (Lyginopteris) - Alabama
This is a 2.7" fossil fern (Lyginopteris), from the Pottsville Formation, Alabama. It is four pinnules (branch of leaflets). This specimen is well preserved with individual lobes visible. The stalk of the frond is also visible. The reverse has and additional two pinnules.
Lyginopteris is genus of seed fern that contain extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
