1.2" Fossil Shrimp (Belotelson) - Illinois
This is a 1.2" fossil shrimp (Belotelson), preserved in an ironstone nodule, from the Carbondale Formation near Essex, Illinois. Under magnification, this secimen shows incredible detail.
Belotelson is a moderate sized lobsteroid with a smooth carapace, stalked eyes, and very long rostrum. It had strong legs and a spiky tail perhaps indicating a poor swimmer, but active scavenger.
