1.65" Polished Ethiopian Chocolate Opal Nodule - Yita Ridge
This is a spectacular, 1.65" wide Ethiopian chocolate opal nodule from the Mezezo Opal Occurrence in Ethiopia. These opal nodules exhibit eye-catching flash and have been split and polished to a glossy finish. This specimen features a dancing play of color that flitters between purple, blue, red, green, and orange. Pictures simply can't do justice to the beauty of this opal.
Ethiopian chocolate opal is a nodular form of opal discovered in the 1990s. They form within a roughly 10-foot-thick layer of volcanic ash on the northern side of Yita Ridge in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. These nodules are known for their chocolate-like coloration and exceptional color play, though only a small percentage of these nodules actual display opalescence. Red and orange are the most common colors seen: blue is quite rare. Specimens with a complete color spectrum are understandably considered to be the highest quality of Ethiopian chocolate opal.
