This is a 1.35" tall polished egg of binthalya opal, an opalised radiolarite (fine grained, siliceous ocean sediment). This form of common opal comes from an area in the Kennedy Ranges, located about 100 miles inland from the coastal town of Camarvon, Western Australia. It features alternating bands of pastel red, orange, and red-purple coloration. The polish on this specimen is outstanding, with no scuffs or dull spots like those seen on lesser quality material.
