1.2" Uraninite (Pitchblende) Specimen - Uranium Based
This is a really cool, 1.2" wide specimen of uraninite collected from Shaft 207 in Saxony, Germany. It comes in an acrylic display case.
About Uraninite
Uraninite, also known as pitchblende, is a radioactive, uranium-rich mineral and ore with a chemical composition that is largely UO2 but because of oxidation typically contains variable proportions of U3O8. Radioactive decay of the uranium causes the mineral to contain oxides of lead and trace amounts of helium. It may also contain thorium and rare-earth elements.
Radiation Safety - Because uraninite is uranium-based, it is mildly radioactive. While this level of emitted radiation shouldn't cause any concern for intermittent handling, it is probably advisable not to have close contact for extended periods of time. Care should also be taken to avoid inhaling or ingesting dust from these samples. We also recommend washing hands after handling, especially considering the mineral includes lead oxides.
