The Saint-Aubin meteorite is a iron (IIIAB) meteorite that landed in Champagne, France roughly 55,000 years ago. Five pieces were found in 1968 by farmers as they plowed fields. More recent discoveries using advanced metal detection equipment have brought its total collected mass to over 6 metric tons. It also has a very attractive Widmanstätten pattern with a high nickel, high gold, and low iridium chemistry.

About Fine Octahedrite (Iiiab) Iron Meteorites

Fine Octahedrite meteorites belong to the IIIAB class of iron meteorites and are renowned for their distinct internal structure and crystalline patterns. Classified under the octahedrite group, these meteorites feature a fine-grained Widmanstätten pattern—a unique latticework of iron-nickel crystals that only forms when the metal cools extremely slowly over millions of years within the parent asteroid. The IIIAB chemical classification indicates a specific nickel content, typically ranging between 7% and 12%, along with traces of other elements such as gallium, germanium, and iridium.

The intricate Widmanstätten pattern, visible after acid-etching the polished surface, reveals long, thin kamacite and taenite bands. These bands, organized in a distinctive octahedral structure, exhibit interlocking lines that form a beautiful geometric pattern, making these meteorites highly desirable to collectors and scientists alike. Fine Octahedrites are often characterized by narrower crystal bands than medium or coarse octahedrites, indicating faster cooling rates within their parent body.
