Campo del Cielo refers to a group of meteorites that were discovered within an 18.5 by 3 kilometer area in the Campo del Cielo region of northeastern Argentina. These meteorites were part of an approximately 300-ton meteorite that likely fell between 4000-5000 years ago. At least 26 craters have been discovered since their report to the general public in 1576. Approximately 100 tons of meteorite fragments having been recovered, the most of any meteorite find!

Iron meteorites are primarily composed of iron and nickel alloys, with distinctive patterns and metallic sheen that set them apart from other meteorite types. These patterns are unique to iron meteorites and can’t be replicated on Earth, offering a rare glimpse into the conditions of the early solar system.

One of the most famous iron meteorite falls is the Campo del Cielo, a group of meteorites found in Argentina, first reported in 1576 by Spanish explorers but known to have been familiar to indigenous cultures for centuries. The Campo del Cielo meteorites are believed to have fallen approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago, scattering over an area covering 60 square kilometers. This meteorite impact site is one of the largest known on Earth, with individual fragments weighing from just a few grams to over 30 tons. The composition of Campo del Cielo meteorites is roughly 90% iron and 8% nickel, with trace amounts of cobalt and phosphorus. These fragments are highly sought after for their historical significance, distinct etched patterns, and connection to early solar system material, making them popular among collectors and scientists alike.

What Are "Campo Nuggets" Or "Campo Crystals"?

"Campo Nuggets" or "Campo Crystals" refer to small pieces of the Campo del Cielo iron meteorite that have been tumbled and are often used in creating unique jewelry. Most fragments of the Campo meteorite are quite large, weighing several pounds or more. Campo nuggets are created by fragmenting these larger pieces through a process of freezing them with liquid nitrogen, then applying a sudden shock, such as from explosives. These fragments are then tumbled to remove any rough edges.
