Very Displayable 2.15" Scaphites Ammonite - South Dakota
This is a well preserved and very displayable Scaphites ammonite from the Upper Cretaceous, Fox Hills Formation of South Dakota. These ammonites are found inside of hard concretions (nodules) which are broken open to reveal them. In this case the concretion has been shaped to create a beautiful, free-standing display. The ammonite has a gorgeous iridescent shell, and the rock is full of small clam fossils.
