This is a 3.0" unidentifed fossil seed fern stalk, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. It is likely a limb or smaller branch of a tree fern. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
