8.2" Pennsylvanian Fern (Sphenopteris) Plate - Kentucky
This is a 8.2" fossil seed fern (Sphenopteris) plate, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen contains scattered sections of leaflets, pinnules (branch of leaflets) and stalks. There is a section of Calamites stalk on one corner of the plate. Both come from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
