7.2" Fossil Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Partial Skull - South Dakota

This is a partial skull of an oreodont (Merycoidodon culbertsoni) from the oligocene-aged Brule Formation (White River Badlands Group) of South Dakota. The skull is approximately 50% complete and was found with a natural open mouth preservation.

Comes with an acrylic display stand to assist with presentation.

The remaining bone is fairly weathered. The majority of the left half of the upper skull is missing.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
