6.4" Fossil Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Skull - South Dakota
This is a 6.4" long skull of an oreodont (Merycoidodon culbertsoni), collected from the White River Formation (Brule subunit) in South Dakota and would be approximately 30-33 million years old. This skull is approximately 80% complete.
It is accompanied by an acrylic display stand to assist with presentation.
Most of the restoration to this specimen can be found along the right side of the skull. This restoration includes the zygomatic arch continuing just beneath the orbital, three of the molars, a portion of the premaxilla, and the posterior-most section of the mandible. All of the incisors are restored and the left premaxilla and maxilla have undergone some restoration.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
