6.5" Fossil Fern (Sphenopteris & Lycopodites) Plate - Kentucky
This is a fossil fern (Sphenopteris sp. and Lycopodites sp.) plate from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. Sphenopteris is an extinct genus of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns. Lycopodites was an herbaceous plant, meaning it did not have a woody stem and its stalks were green and fairly soft.
There is a large unidentified stalk that runs through the middle of this specimen. It comes with an acrylic display stand.
