5.3" Pennsylvanian, Fossil Club Moss (Lepidodendron) Plate - Alabama

This is a 5.3" fossil club moss (Lepidodendron), from the Pottsville Formation, Alabama. This beautiful specimen are the "leaves" of this incredible plant. It is so nicely preserved, some plant material remains. It is easy to see why it is called the scale tree. Plant material on the reverse side is also Lepidodendron.

Lepidodendron, also called scale trees, is a genus of extinct, primitive, vascular, tree-like plants most closely related to gill worts and and club mosses, that grew up to 98ft (30m) and had trunks a 3.2ft (1m) in diameter.
