.4" Fossil Jellyfish (Octomedusa) In Ironstone Nodule - Illinois
This is a .4" fossil jellyfish (Octomedusa), preserved in an ironstone nodule, from the Carbondale Formation near Essex, Illinois. This specimen shows the bell (head) of the jellyfish. Under magnification the base of one of the eight arms can be seen. Soft bodied organisms are rare in the fossil record making this specimen a unique addition to a collection.
