3.1" Pennsylvanian Fossil Fern And Horsetail Plate - Kentucky
This is a 3.1" fossil seed fern (Neuropteris) plate, from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This specimen contains scattered sections of leaflets, pinnules (branch of leaflets) and stalks of Neuropteris and a section of Sphenophyllum whorl. This is the leaves of a plant very similar to modern horsetails. They all come from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
