2" Oligocene, Fossil "Rabbit" (Palaeolagus) Skull - Wyoming
This amazing specimen features a rabbit-like lagomorph (Palaeolagus haydeni) skull with an in-situ presentation. The skull measures 2" long and was collected from the Oligocene age White River Formation in Converse County, Wyoming. Rabbit skulls/bones are quite fragile and lightweight, and are rarely found as complete and intact as this specimen is. In fact, the environments that many lagomorphs inhabited were not ideal for preserving fossils.
Comes with an acrylic display stand to assist with presentation. The skull is beautifully intact, only requiring crack repair where the rock broke through the skull during collection.

Palaeolagus is a genus of lagomorph that resembled modern day rabbits. These small mammals had a skeleton that was very similar to rabbits, but the hind legs were shorter, suggesting that they didn't leap or hop. They lived during the Oligocene epoch and fossil records indicate that they only inhabited North America.
