2.7" Ordovician Oncoceratid Fossil - Illinois
This is a 2.7" long example of a Middle Ordovician fossil Oncoceratid from Illinois. It was recovered from the Platteville group near Dixon, Illinois. This specimen was purchased from a collection which makes further identification difficult.
Oncoceratids are curved nautiloid cephalopods that have been identified from the Middle Ordovician up to the Late Silurian. Richardsonoceras is known for having a stronger convex curvature than other cephalopods in the family Oncoceratidae.
