This is a beautiful 2.6" fossil fern (Lygenopteris) frond, from the Pottsville Formation, Alabama. This beautiful specimen is so well preserved, it still shows amazing detail in each leaflet.
Lygenopteris is a genus of seed fern that contains a number of extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
