13" Fossil Flora (Neuropteris & Sphenophyllum) Plate - Kentucky
This is a fossil flora plate from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. It contains a collection of flora that includes fern fossils (Neuropteris sp.) and fossil horsetail (Sphenophyllum sp.) leaves. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.
Neuropteris is an extinct genera of seed fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns. Sphenophyllum is an extinct genus of herbaceous horsetail from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Eastern Kentucky and Ohio.
Comes with an acrylic/metal (gibson) display stand.
