11.5" Running Rhino (Hyracodon) Jaw Section - South Dakota
This is a beautiful, 11.5" long, running rhino (Hyracodon) jaw section from South Dakota. It is most of the left mandible (lower jaw) and a small section of the left maxilla (upper jaw). There are three teeth in the maxilla and six in the mandible. There are areas of repair, fill and restoration as one would expect on this kind of specimen.
Hyracodons were hornless running rhinoceroses with large heads compared to their slight, pony-like bodies. They are an extinct line, though: we're sure you've noticed that there are no rhinos browsing the plains of North America today.
