Rare, Vibrant Red Gillespite Specimen - Canada #305459

This is a 1.6" wide formation of the rare, vibrant red, barium-bearing mineral, gillespite. The gillespite forms as red tabular crystals up to 5mm wide, in a pellyite matrix with cerchiaraite-(FE), hedenbergite, and taramellite. This material comes out of Gun claim about 4km southeast Wilson Lake in Yukon, Canada.

The specimen is accompanied by a small acrylic display case.

Gillespite is a rare barium mineral only found in metamorphic contact zones and glacial moraines. It typically displays a beautiful deep red color. It is named for its discoverer, Frank Gillespie, who first found the mineral in a moraine on a mining claim he had staked. The type locality is in the Dry Delta, west of the Alaska Range in south-central Alaska.
