This is a 3.5" wide cluster of black kyanite, sourced from Ribeirão da Folha in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Kyanite comes in many colors besides blue! The gray-black color in this specimen is caused by graphite inclusions. Black kyanites were first sold out of Ribeirão da Folha in Minas Gerais, Brazil, mistakenly labeled as a rare amphibole. It most commonly forms crystals in fan-shaped clusters. Common trade names for this variety of kyanite include "reticite" and "raethicite", named after the Rhaetian Alps in Italy, where it was originally discovered.
