1.95" Striking Green Metatorbernite Crystal Cluster - DR Congo

This is an alluring cluster of striking green metatorbernite crystals that was collected from the Musonoi Mine (Cu-Co-U deposit) of Lualaba, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The vast majority of the crystals are in pristine condition and exhibit a brilliant luster when rotated back and fourth.

It has been mounted to an acrylic display base with mineral tack.

Metatorbernite is a radioactive phosphate mineral that commonly forms by the dehydration of torbernite. When formed this way, it typically causes breakage within the crystal lattice, resulting in the crystals having a lighter green color and dull luster. However, when crystals are formed by direct deposition, they often bear dark green color and a vitreous luster.

While its often found in association with torbernite, it can also be found among autunite, meta-autunite, and uraninite.

Chemical Formula: Cu(UO2)2(PO4)2 · 8H2O

While metatorbernite does in fact contain uranium, its risk level is considered low since only a small amount of uranium makes up the crystal. That being said, it's suggested that metatorbernite should be stored in a well ventilated area and/or in a case isolated from open air or other specimens.
