1.9" Sparkling Chrome Chalcedony Specimen - Chromite Mine, Turkey
This is a 1.9" wide rock that is encrusted in a layer of chalcedony. It was collected from the Chromite Mine which is located in the Bursa Province of Turkey. The presence of chromium and iron within the underlying rock, gives the specimen its green and orange coloration.
Chrome chalcedony is a variety of chalcedony that gains its green color from trace amounts of chromium. Depending on where it comes from, it may have different names. Specimens from Australia are called chrome chalcedony, from Zimbabwe its known as "mtorolite" and specimens from Bolivia are often referred to as "chiquitanita". Chrome chalcedony is similar to chrysoprase, but chrysoprase earns its color from trace amounts of nickel as opposed to chrome chalcedony's chromium.
