While both vanadium and chromium can produce the intense green hues associated with emeralds, vanadium-rich emeralds often display a slightly lighter or more yellowish-green tone. These gemstones are found in regions like Brazil and Madagascar, where vanadium naturally occurs in the geological environment. Despite the difference in coloring agents, vanadium emeralds possess the same physical properties as traditional emeralds, including excellent hardness (7.5–8 on the Mohs scale) and a vitreous luster. Their striking color, combined with exceptional clarity in some specimens, makes vanadium emerald beryl a highly desirable gemstone for collectors and jewelry enthusiasts alike.

Opinions differ on whether green beryl colored by vanadium qualifies as an emerald. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recognizes it as an emerald, while the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) does not
