.56" Erg Chech 002 Achondrite Meteorite (1g) - Oldest Known Meteorite
This is a .56" wide (1.0 gram) piece of the Erg Chech 002 meteorite, which was found near the Erg Chech Sand Sea in southern Algeria in 2020. This meteorite displays all the beautiful characteristics of this meteorite: it lacks fusion crust, but shows a nice contrast of coarse dark grains set in a tan matrix.
Importantly, this meteorite is of volcanic origin. Researchers suspect this meteorite is a fragment of a chondritic protoplanet at least as old as the solar system itself. This makes Erg Chech 002 perhaps the oldest volcanic rock known to man!
