.45" Enstatite Chondrite Meteorite Slice (.69 g) - NWA 15893
This is a 0.45" wide slice (0.69 grams) from the enstatite chondrite meteorite, NWA 15893, found in Northwest Africa in 2022. It has been cut flat on both sides, showing of the lustrous metallic chondrules. It comes in a bespoke acrylic display case.
About Enstatite Chondrites
An enstatite chondrite is a rare type of stony meteorite that contains high amounts of the mineral enstatite (a magnesium silicate). It belongs to the broader class of chondrites, which are primitive, non-metallic meteorites that have not been modified much since the solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago.
What makes enstatite chondrites unique is their reduced state—they formed in environments with very little oxygen. As a result, they contain unusual minerals, including metals and sulfides that wouldn't normally exist in oxygen-rich environments. These meteorites are thought to have formed in the inner regions of the early solar system, possibly near the orbit of Mercury.
There are two main types of enstatite chondrites:
EH chondrites – High-iron enstatite chondrites.
EL chondrites – Low-iron enstatite chondrites.
Enstatite chondrites are scientifically significant because they have isotopic compositions similar to Earth's, suggesting that much of Earth's building material may have come from bodies similar to enstatite chondrites.
