1.88" Putinga Chondrite Meteorite Fragment (12.2 g) - Brazil
This is a 1.88" wide (12.2 gram) fragment of the chondrite meteorite known as Putinga. The fragment has been cut to reveal the stunning interplay of multicolored chondrules and bright metal grains in its interior. It comes with its own display case.
Putinga, also known as Encantada, is an L6 chondrite that fell in the Brazillian state of Rio Grande do Sul on August 16, 1937 at 4:30 PM. The bolide was observed falling near the town of Putinga. The next day fragments were found partially buried 2 to 3 meters in the ground and up to 300 kilograms were recovered.
Pieces of this chondrite often contains fusion crust, and slices reveal a colorful mixture of light and earth-toned chondrules with occasional flashes of metal grains.
