Very Rare Partial Fossil Bird With Pos/Neg - Green River Formation

This is a very rare, partial bird fossil from the Eocene-aged Green River Formation in Wyoming. It was collected this summer at our Fossil Lake Safari near Kemmerer, Wyoming and is only one of three birds found this summer at the quarry. The fossil measures 3" wide and includes the back half of the bird and the wings. Based on what is present it's difficult to narrow down an identification given that there are about three dozen bird species described from the formation.

Both the positive and negative split of the fossil is include along with a pair of acrylic display stands.

About Fossil Lake

50 million years ago, in the Eocene epoch, these fish thrived in Fossil Lake, which was fed by the Uinta and Rocky Mountain highlands. The anoxic conditions at the bottom of Fossil Lake slowed bacterial decomposition, prevented scavengers from disturbing corpses, and, most interestingly, suffocated creatures that ventured into the oxygen-starved aquatic layer. The result is a miraculous exhibition of Eocene biota: a subtropical aquatic community within sycamore forests, teeming with creatures such as freshwater stingrays, dog-sized horses, menacing alligators, early flying bats, and one of the first primates.
