Two Fossil Crinoids (Pentaramicrinus And Taxocrinus) - Alabama

This is two Mississipian aged crinoids from the Bangor Limestone, Franklin County, Alabama. They are a .8" Pentaramicrinus and a .6" Taxocrinus and show the calyx (body and pinnules (feeding arms) of both. They are contained on a 2.4 x 2.2" limestone. There are various crinoid segments and other organisms partially exposed in the limestone, as well.

Crinoids, sometimes commonly referred to as sea lilies, are animals, not plants. They are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. Many crinoid traits are like other members of their phylum; such traits include tube feet, radial symmetry, a water vascular system, and appendages in multiples of five (pentameral). They first appeared in the Ordovician (488 million years ago) and some species are still alive today.
