Two Discoscaphites Ammonites - South Dakota
This is a pair of Discoscaphites conradi ammonites from the Fox Hills Formation of South Dakota. They were found inside of a hard concretion and the rock had to be meticulously prepared away using air scribes. The larger 2.5" wide ammonite retains much of it's iridescent shell which has some green and pink hues when the light hits it from the right angle. The smaller ammonite is missing the outside so that you can see the inner living chambers of the animal.
The base of the rock has been sawed off so the piece sits upright, creating a very aesthetic display.
