Three Devonian Ammonoids (Anetoceras) with Four Trilobite Heads

This is a 11.1" wide specimen of the Early Devonian ammonites (Anetoceras), quarried in the Anti-Atlas Region of Morocco. The ammonites have been painstakingly prepared from the hard limestone matrix that they were found. This particular specimen displays heads of 5 trilobites, some of which have beautiful eye preservation.

The largest ammonoid cephalopod is 4.4" wide.

Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled a squid with a shell. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, though the shells resemble that of a nautilus.
