Scytalocrinus & Actinocrinites Crinoids - Indiana
This is a pair of crinoid fossils from the famous Witherspoon Quarry near Crawfordsville, Indiana. There is a 1.4" long crown of a Scytalocrinus decadactylus along with a long stemmed Actinocrinites gibsoni. The specimens are very detailed and were prepared under microscope using air abrasives.
Note: Both of the specimens have been mounted on the matrix and it's unlikely that they were naturally associated together.
It is believed that crinoids from the Ramp Creek Limestone were buried in sediment from nearby deltas during storms. The resulting siltstone deposits are soft enough that fossils can be extracted in exquisite, three-dimensional relief.
