Pelorosaurus is considered to be the first sauropod dinosaur named and described as a dinosaur. Gideon Mantell is credited with naming the dinosaur in 1850 after Richard Owen named Pelorosaurus' relative Cetiosaurus in 1841, though Owen believed it to be the remains of a giant crocodile. These brachiosaurids grew up to 80 feet long and walked the Earth from the end of the Jurassic through the mid Cretaceous. This genus is described from scattered fossils, and much of the dinosaur has yet to be discovered. Some paleontologists believe that they may have lived in close proximity with the sauropod Xenoposiedon.
