Very Rare, 2.3" Primitive Iguanodont (Valdosaurus) Claw - England
This is a rare, 2.3" long toe claw of a Lower Cretaceous aged ornithopod dinosaur from the family Dryosauridae (primitive Iguanodonts). It was collected from the Wealden Clays of the Wessex Formation on the Isle of Wight. We can not definitively identify it, but it is likely Valdosaurus. This claw is in extremely good condition with partial, stable pyrite replacement. British dinosaur material is very rare and only small amounts circulate on the market, so they should not be overlooked by collectors.
Valdosaurus was a bipedal ornithopod which is known from several partial skeletons and skulls. It is estimated to have grown up to 13 feet long and had sturdy hind limbs, small, wide hands and a head with an elongated snout; imagine a slimmer, smaller Iguanodon. Its teeth suggest it was a herbivore.
