Prepare Your Own Fossil Fish Kit (A Grade)
Here is a great gift for a kid or even adult to spark their interest in fossils. It is a kit allowing them to prepare their own 50 million year old fossil fish. These fish come from the Green River Formation of Wyoming that yield some of the best preserved fossil fish in the world.
The kit comes with a slab of shale with the fossil fish buried just underneath the surface. The backbone of it and general shape is outline in pencil There is a small needle like tool include that allows you scratch the rock away to expose the fish. Instructions and an informational packet are also included. NOTE: Fully preparing this fish will take MANY hours of work.
The fish is of either the species Knightia eocaena or Diplomystus dentatus, should be complete and between 4-6 inches long. Because the fish is completely buried underneath the surface of the rock no guarantees can be made to it's exact condition or how it will prep. The difference between the A and B grade prep kits is primarily the size of the fish and size/shape of matrix.
Kids under ten should probably have adult supervision when preparing this fossil.
The second photo, is an example of what a prepared Knightia from this location looks like. More prepared examples can be found at http://www.fossilera.com/fossils-for-sale/green-river-fossil-fish
