3" Polished Petrified Pine Cone (Araucaria) Slice - Jurassic

This is an petrified pine cone fossil from Patagonia, Argentina. It's mid Jurassic in age (160 Million Years Old). Volcanic activity during this period of time, covered many of these coniferous trees in ash. This layering of ash resulted in the anaerobic environment necessary for petrifying wood, or in this case, pine cones.

The pine cone was sliced along its transverse plane, allowing for a cross sectional view of the pinecone's inner structure. A truly breathtaking and colorful specimen! It comes with an acrylic display stand.
