Partial 4.2" Fossil Sperm Whale Tooth - South Carolina
This is a Miocene aged fossil sperm whale tooth that was found in South Carolina associated with shark teeth including Megalodon. These whales would have been a food source for the gigantic Megalodon sharks living at the same time. The tooth is very solid and is 4.3 inches in length.
While the tooth came from a sperm whale, identifying it to the genus level is impossible. This is because there were 14 known genera of Sperm Whales living in the past compared to 2 today. The size and shape of teeth between these types overlap significantly.
