Large 2.83" Snout Nosed Spathacalymene Trilobite - Rare!
This is an very rare Silurian trilobite from the Osgood Formation in Indiana, Spathacalymene nasuta. This trilobite has a distinctive snout projection off the front of the glabella that may have been used to stir up sediment for feeding. This specimen is very large for the species at 2.83" long with the majority of specimens I see averaging around an inch in length.
It's extremely 3D, has great shell preservation and preparation with the rostrum prepared free of the matrix. This specimen has NOT been remounted as most specimens are, due to being found ventrally while surface collecting.
There is some restoration to the specimen, the very tip of the rostrum, the edge of the left cheek and one pleural tip on the right hand side have restoration work done to them.
