Huge 5.8" Zlichovaspis Trilobite With One Orange Eye

This is a HUGE example of Zlichovaspis rugosa from Ofaten, Morocco. It has a bit of an arch to it and the head is tucked, but would have been about 5.8" long if completely outstretched. Another interesting feature of this trilobite is that the left eye is orange. Orange eye preservation is occasionally seen on trilobites from this locality but it's pretty unusual for one to have one orange eye and one black one.

The preparation is exceptional and the trilobite has been pedestaled, leaving it flying above the base on a pillar of limestone. There is only about 1% shell restoration along repaired cracks.

About Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that thrived for nearly 270 million years, from the early Cambrian to the end of the Permian period (around 521 to 252 million years ago). They are one of the most successful and diverse groups in the history of life, with over 25,000 described species spanning a wide range of sizes, shapes, and ecological niches. Known for their distinctive, segmented exoskeletons, trilobites provide invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of arthropods and the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems.
