Extremely Rare 2.2" Lanceaspis Trilobite - Mjane, Morocco

This is an extremely rare type of Phacopid trilobite called Lanceaspis hammondi. The location it comes from was collected out after only a single digging season about eight years ago. Only a very small number of specimens were recovered, and this one remained unprepared until recently. This specimen is a little bit laterally compressed, but has no restoration.

The most defining feature of Lanceaspis is an extremely elongated rostrum (nose) which represents nearly 40% of the overall body length. It seems to be related in some way to Morocconites but the rostrum is much longer. This species was described as a new genus and species, Lanceaspis hammondi

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
