Eocene Aged Fossil Turtle Egg - France

This is a very unusual fossil, it is an Eocene aged fossil turtle egg from France. Fossil eggs are extremely rare in the fossil record, so this is quite a unique offering. These were laid on the bank of a lake about 50 million years ago. The rock formation was exposed in a now abandoned quarry and over 44 vertebrate species have been described from the location.

There are also eggs from several other types of reptiles found at the site including crocodiles, snakes, and lizards. The primary differences used in describing them is size, length to width ratio, thickness of shell, and external shell patterns.
